Fundamentally, ‘management’ in businesses and organisations is ‘decision-making’ in many forms, levels and situations. Olympic sailracing is ‘decision-making-contest’, utilizing the changing conditions against opponents reaching the finish ahead.
Trying to anticipate the changing weather under constant scrutiny of public and pressure of your opponents who want to finish in front of you, while hurt from hiking hard to sail the boat as fast as you can. That, in short, describes sailracing.

This observation has convinced me that both worlds can learn from eachother, and yes, occasionally I listen to lectures with new concepts from busisness coaches.
From my side, which is in this case, the sailing side, I would like to present you with some products which are based on my experience and vision on ‘Performing in Sailracing’. I would like to take you and your staff out on a suited yacht, learn you to race the boat and show you what the essence of our sport is, and find out what there is to learn from it transferring it to your unique issues on the job.

Already during designing this experience, we will try to help you formulate the insights of what you feel will be useful and essential for your organisation. Not only when we determine the activities, but also during ‘aftercare’ our return visit some time after the program, we try to achieve sustianablity of the learnings from your teambuilding with Coachworks by Rigo de Nijs.

Systemic Coaching

times during a race no ‘passing lanes’ exist, this is where the expirienced sailor know how to wait and prepare for the next possible change!


During ‘systemic coaching’ the coach is responsible for the design of the development process and the coachee for the content of the development.

This can function in 7 application areas between organisation, work and privatlife of the coachee and it always respects the fact that a coach is not a part of the coachee‘s reality and therefore refrains from instructions or directions.

Being the basic element in the Coachworks product-line for Management, the systemic coaching can be of interest in several ways.
Of course systemic coaching by Coachworks is an option for single persons in your organisation, but when a problem which involves several persons or a ‘team’ is adressed, I believe that when developing a sustainable activity, the systemic approach is by design, the best way to optimise the intervention according to your needs, norms and beliefs. A Vision On Team

eventhough it looks static during this hiking position still quite a bit of communication about routing or handling takes places in good teams, the others communicate too but most likely more related to the bars that were visited last night!


Many organisations use the word TEAM while the way this group tries to function, is as far away from this phenomenon as can be. Respecting the many meanings there are out there, Coachworks would like to present to you it‘s vision on this issue.

Presenting a complex and abstract concept like TEAM in a ‘ppt‘-presentation is apparently the way to go in ‘the management coaching world’.
In my world, where this concept is key for performance at the ultimate level, developing TEAM is drained in the everyday training, and needs to be taught and felt ‘to the bone’ to have it’s effect at crunch time.
So, with Coachworks we will take your ‘team’ to the next level.

How to decide during change

Hmmmmm, I wonder if any change is coming?


As the utilisation of changing conditions in a yachtrace is the essence for succes, in business often change is dreaded, reaktive and seen as a neccesary evil.
So I cannot imagine a better platform to show how to get into this (or another) frame of mind towards change, than sailing a race on a yacht.

Changing surroundings and getting your staff out in bad weather (especially heavy) are quite common in teambuilding events, since they believe a change of scenery will show qualities from people which they normally won‘t on the job.
Well this all happens at the Coachworks activities, but...... Sailracing is all about ‘utilizing changes in conditions as the race takes place’. So nature throws all it’s tricky winds at you and we’ll teach you how to have succes over your opponents. This concept is what makes the Sailing Game different than any other activity and what we are happy to share with you.

Sharing Norms and Values in a Team

Sharing norms and values in a team

Or; Getting people in your ,boat‘. One of the big challenges at the beginning of an Olympiad is the development of new teams and training groups. With a mix of characters, a wide range of dreams, expectations and different goals and methods, high skilled sailors with varied histories step into a four year highly stressed period, mostly without any guidance or plan of what is to come. Helping teams develop through this four year cycle and see them become medalwinners during World Championships, or Olympic Games is rare, but tremendously rewarding when one has been actively involved in working out the human factor inside this team and amidst a specific culture.
Recognise any of this when you look at your own organisation that you’ve been trying to change?

Again, I think we can learn quite a bit from eachother and Coachworks is happy to share it‘s vision.
